Cigars should be kept at optimum humidity levels. Never too dry and never too moist. An area of 72% Humidity is best, but can range between 68% and 74%. The room temperature should be around 64 degrees Fahrenheit.
An inexpensive way to monitor your room for humidity is to purchase a good digital hygrometer.
These are great for a very close, not perfectly accurate, means of checking the humidity in a room where your cigars are located.
Naturally, if you are smoking very expensive cigars, you do not want them to turn to brittle and fall apart, and a digital hygrometer for the price may be worth it.
Digital hygrometers can range from as low as $7.00 up to $50.00, depending on the make, model and the accuracy they claim.
Many of them are made of plastic, and come in very slim designs, and can be used in any environment, including mobile homes, and apartment houses.

Some specs to consider when purchasing a digital hygrometer are:

Slim Design Max Min C/F
Run Indoors
Low/High Memory which is USEFUL FOR indoors
Humidity and temperature display.
Simultaneous display of humidity and temperature
Switch between C or F
Sensors test the indoor humidity and temperature
Fits into any space with its unique design
Can be used in office/home/refrigerator/freezer/cabinet.
Shows Memory of the last lowest and highest temperatures.

There are a few types of hygrometers, depending on what your preferences are. There is the Analog Hygrometer, which has a nice look for cosmetics and comes as three types.
The first type is the Analog Hygrometers that come with a metal spring, which are the easiest to calibrate.

The other types are the hair type hygrometers, which come the closest to actual humidity and are extremely accurate. The two types of hair hygrometers are the natural hair and synthetic hair. Both are extremely accurate, but the synthetic hair requires less calibration and maintenance.

The metal spring analog hygrometer functions with a coiled spring and is sensitive to the humidity in the are. A needle would move across a scale on the face of the hygrometer showing the humidity.
A metal spring cigar hygrometer is not as expensive as the hair type hygrometers, and not nearly as accurate. For accuracy, either type of hair cigar hygrometer would be best.

Adorini is a good choice for a hair type humidor, but they can be hard to find and a bit pricey.
Digital cigar hygrometers are easy to find and more popular for the frugal consumer. There are many types, many brand names and many decisions when it comes to digital hygrometers.

Most people spend the money on a hygrometer in direct relation to the type of cigar they are smoking. The more expensive cigar, the better the hygrometer. The last thing a cigar smoker wants is an expensive $7 to $20 dollar cigar becoming brittle and drying out. If you are an occasional cigar smoker, then a nice digital hygrometer may be your best bet.

As a serious cigar smoker, you probably already know the advantages of hygrometers.

A cigar smoker must realize the most effective hygrometer warns you regarding the damaging amount of humidity for their cigar stash.
