Kitchen remodeling is a project that many people don't fully understand the scope of until they've begun to investigate not only what goes into such a job, but also how it can affect the long-term value of the home. For most kitchen remodeling jobs, it's best to call in a professional. However, knowing which contractor or handyman to work with can sometimes be difficult, with stories widely circulating about homeowners getting burned in bad kitchen remodeling deals. Nevertheless, the fact of the matter is that there are a number of ways that you can actively select a handyman that you can trust.

a.) Insurance, Bonding and Certifications

Because kitchen remodeling generally involves complex tasks like plumbing and wiring, a professional handyman will have sufficient insurance and be properly bonded – and be able to prove it. These contractors often publicly display their bonding or insurance registration information on their vehicles, business cards and invoicing/estimates materials.

A handyman that cannot produce documents to verify such industry-standard requirements should be avoided, as well as those that tell you that there's no need for such insurance or bonding. Unless you're willing to pay the medical and other expenses of one of these workers should they be injured while working on your property, then it's something that you personally must require.

b.) Better Business Bureau

The BBB remains an excellent source of information about a business you're considering working with. Contractors and handymen that are registered with the BBB show that they take their reputation and business standings seriously. For businesses in your state that are registered, you can see if they've ever had a complaint filed, what the status and ultimate resolution of that complaint was, and how the BBB rates the business overall.

c.) Trade and Professional Organizations

Skilled professionals like plumbers, electricians, welders, contractors, and many others often belong to trade or professional organizations. These groups represent the interest of the industry overall and work to protect the group's reputation by providing licensing and certification programs and lobbying for legislation that is beneficial to the company or its consumers. Examples of some organizations include:

Plumbing, Heating, Cooling Contractors Association

National Electrical Contractors Association

American Welding Society

d.) References

Most kitchen remodeling contractors will provide references that praise them. These aren’t always useful. Therefore, it's important to ask around – including asking the references provided – about who else the contractor has worked for. If you can then get in touch with those people, you'll probably get a more realistic reference point.

e.) Reviews/Reports

The internet is a valuable source of information that you can use to determine which handyman is best for your job and budget. Consumer review and reports websites are updated frequently and are often geo-specific. This means that it's often easy to find reviews, comments, or other sources of information about the contractor you're considering.

Ultimately, a kitchen remodeling job isn't a big deal – if you select the right handyman or contractor. But if you don't go with a professional, it could turn into a very big deal indeed – a deal that could cost you thousands. For a direct, professional source, please use the links below now.
