It was 1991 when last these two teams met in the NFC title game. Joe Montana was throwing for the 49ers. Jeff Hostetler was filling in, quite well, for an injured Phil Simms. The Giants came out on , 15-13. Now, these two teams will square off for the second time this season in, what is beginning to look like, another "Cinderella" story for the Big Blue Wrecking Crew.
Who are the San Francisco 49ers?
They are a team who finished with the third-best record in the regular season, 13-3. They are a team who were one game out of last place in 2010. Sadly enough, they were also one game out of first, housed in a division that could have used a shot of Viagra. They are a team that defeated the Giants earlier in the year. That loss initiated a four game losing streak for Big Blue. They are also a team that has one of the five defenses in the league and aim to shut down a ridiculously talented New York aerial attack.
Who are the New York Giants?
If you haven't heard by now, these are the same guys who sent the "best football team in history" to bed without any supper. Last week, the Giants bested the best in Lambeau Field, a place that is not easy to win at. They are currently on a four-game winning streak. So are the 49ers, with a week off in between, of course. One of these team's streaks will come to an end this Sunday. One team's journey will continue. Who will be crowned the NFC Champions this Sunday in San Francisco?
I'll be honest; I've picked against the San Francisco 49ers in every important game they've played this season. Time and time again, they proved me wrong and came out on . Looking at their match-up with the New York Giants for the NFC championship, they're once again making things tough on me.
Firstly, this is potentially the most exciting pairing to this point in the playoffs. It's two teams that have flown under the radar most of the season (despite San Francisco's stellar record) and both pled the two NFC favorites to get where they are. New York dismantled the Green Bay Packers, while the 49ers outlasted the New Orleans Saints. Both of these teams have proven that they belong. The only question now is who in the world is going to win?
I'll be the first to tell you that I'm worthless when it comes to picking games. I tend to try and look for all these logical reasons why the game is going to go a certain way only to have it explode in my face. Why? The reason is that sports aren't logical. It's only my nature that gets me thinking logically. In the case of picking sports games, it doesn't get you far. After that tangent, it's ironic that I'll probably give you a pick at the end anyway.
Both teams have characteristics that I like. The New York Giants have experience; they've been here before. If they can beat Green Bay at Lambeau, I think they can beat San Francisco at Candlestick. Their defense has been playing out of their minds the last few games and have to be brimming with confidence. Again, if you have the ability to shut down Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay offense, shutting down Alex Smith and the 49ers seems like an attainable goal. While Smith has done nothing but continue to impress, I still think I like Eli Manning in this situation just because he's been here before.
