The bottom line: You'd be hard-pressed to discover a pair of operated stereo audio songs system at this price that seems to be better--and provide more flexibility--than the Audioengine 5s.
We've been a little tardy in examining Audioengine's PC songs system, but we're grateful we lastly got our hands on both the 5 sequence ($325) analyzed here and the step-down Audioengine 2 sequence ($199) because they really are quite amazing.
The key thing to observe about both sets of songs system is that they are bookshelf-style songs system disguised as PC or "multimedia" songs system (as these things are apt to be labeled). But as opposed to vintage shelf songs system, these Audioengine designs are operated (via a conventional AC plug); there's no need for a individual device or firm, so you can use them with any songs resource. The larger 5 sequence is the more industrial-looking (read: less stylish) of the two designs and seems to share some history with observe songs system you'd discover in a documenting facilities. It's available in either black or white, as are the 2s. There's also a bamboo sprouts bedding edition of the 5 sequence that costs $449.
The Audioengine 5 songs system evaluate 10 in. high by 7 in. large by 7.9 in. deep. They each have a 5-inch Kevlar woofer and a 20mm cotton dome tweeter. Because the eventually left speaker homes the firm (50 h per channel), it's bulkier than the right speaker. Unlike the 2s, which are ported on the front, the 5s are ported on the back.
It's worth observing that both the 2 and 5 sequence Audioengine songs system come perfectly manufactured, with towel protects over the songs system and cables and wires. The eventually left and right songs system go to each other with "real" speaker wire (included) and you also get an feedback wire that allows you to be connected your PC to the 3.5mm aux feedback on the back of the eventually left speaker. The use of conventional cables and wires means that--unlike some songs system with amazing relationships and cables--you can get custom-length cables and wires that are as long or as short as you'd like.
What's most unique about the Audioengine 5 songs system is the 3.5mm aux feedback on top of the eventually left speaker that rests next to a USB interface. To be clear, the USB interface is only for energy, not for examining songs files; it also doesn't allow pass-through syncing to PCs. But that collaboration of USB power-plus-audio feedback allows you to cost your iPod/iPhone with a USB wire while you're enjoying your songs. And though the cables and wires create it a bit less eye-catching to the eye than a conventional iPod connect, the pairing is far more worldwide in its compatibility: you can cost 'n' play any USB-powered songs device, together with a range of non-Apple songs mobile phone devices and advertising gamers.

The USB energy and songs feedback on the eventually left speaker's top side create for easy mobile gamer hookups.
It gets even better: the second 3.5mm feedback on the eventually left speaker's behind is located near a full-on AC energy port. Audioengine boasts the fact that you can be connected an The apple company AirPort Communicate immediately into the store, transforming the songs system into an iTunes streamer (via Apple's AirTunes functionality). Of course, that store can also energy any other songs source--anything from a Sonos or Squeezebox streamer to a CD gamer.
Note that you can't toggle between inputs; both are always active. That's either going to be a function (say, the ability to pay attention to songs from an iPod while being able to notice the bleeping and blooping from your PC) or a bug (the continuous need to silence one songs resource while enjoying the other), based on your perspective.
