Cordao da Bola Preta, developed in 1918, is among one of Rio de Janeiro's most popular Carnival block functions with roughly 2 million people gathering collectively for a large parade on Avenida Rio Branco.

Thanks to land from the city government, donations and money from shows, in 2009 the bloco inaugurated the new cultural center in Lapa, with room for exhibits, a bar, and Carnival functions.
The 2012 Rio de Janeiro Carnaval season comes with several large modifications for Cordao da Bola Preta. For the 1st time in its history, the main parade shall be sound-wired by the city admin. According to the Formal Rio de Janeiro Carnival Guide, the latest structure for the Carnival Saturday parade on Avenida Rio Branco will grant the bloco to use four sound trucks, one fewer than in 2011.
