Familiarity with your dog's food preferences will help you to train your dog. Giving your dog treats which he really enjoys when he does something right can speed up the training process. Watch what he does when you give him the reward, whether he gobbles it up or picks at it, to see which foods will motivate him the most.

A clicker is one way you can help to reinforce acceptable behavior. In order to begin, simply create a happy mental link between the clicker's sound and something the dog enjoys. You should click, and then immediately treat. This method will be necessary until your dog learns that the "reward" is the clicking sound alone. Eventually, your dog will learn that the noise means "good," and this will help shape their behavior by using this tool.

Don't be shy about telling your guests how to behave around your dog. This can get your dog overly excited and confused. He may start to jump on the guest or assert his dominance.

When training a puppy to use a crate it is important to take your time and start with only a few steps at a time. If they are uncomfortable with the door closed then try to feed them snacks to reassure them that they are okay. Begin by leaving the dog in the crate for about ten seconds, then increase that time by small increments. If you notice the animal becoming tense or confused, you are probably proceeding too quickly.

Potty pads should not be used by anyone who is attempting to potty-train their dog. The wee-wee pads leak, and leave enzymes from urine and feces behind. They also have the side effect of conditioning dogs to think that any similar-looking item is also acceptable to use as a bathroom. Teach the dog that the only acceptable place to relieve himself is outside.

Keep your sessions short to accommodate a short attention span. Devoting strict amounts of time to any particular aspect of training will have your dog feeling distracted and bored. This is why you need to limit the time of your training sessions to around 10 minutes.

When you are training your dog away from chewing inappropriately, remember to set him up for success. Remember to keep you dog away from anything that is considered dangerous to chew. Things like brushes, small toys and nylons are common things around the house that pose a choking hazard.

When you are trying to house train a puppy, it is not going to learn overnight, so be prepared. Get rid of accidents immediately to improve training efficiency. Urine and feces smells will stay in the carpet if you don't clean them up straight away, causing your dog to go back to the same place to do his business. Buy a product specially designed to neutralize odors.

Challenge your dog to try new things and maintain the old things. Give him "quizzes" to make sure he still knows his stuff, even if you both know he does.

If certain things trigger bad behavior in your dog, keep him occupied whenever you pass something that will tempt him to misbehave. If your dog has trouble around other dogs, consider keeping him occupied whenever the two of you pass another dog whenever you are on your walks together. By doing this, you prevent your dog from making a habit of bad behavior by giving him something positive to associate with the trigger situation.

Disobedient or untrained dogs can easily make a mess of your house and threaten your sense of well-being. The information in this article makes it possible for you to turn that nasty, destructive dog into a model house pet.
