If you are trying to potty train a puppy, pee pads are not useful. These "wee-wee" pads can leak pet urine and feces, which can cause the puppy to mistake the area for a permanent toilet. Wee-wee pads also lead dogs to believe that anything in a similar shape is fine to use as an indoor bathroom. It is important that you teach your dog that the great outdoors is their potty.

There are a lot of tricks you can teach your dog to do; a common one is training him to hold a toy in his mouth without chewing it. Every time he does it, give him a snack and use the clicker. After several repetitions of this, wait for him to put it in his mouth. Once he does, click and reward. The next step is encouraging the dog to carry the toy with his mouth.

Putting your dog on a regular schedule of feeding and walks will help to regulate his system, so he will be easier to house train. This can train your dog to whine or come get you when he feels the urge, so you can let him out and prevent him from doing his business inside. When a dog has a schedule, they also learn the valuable skill of "holding it" until you take him for his next scheduled trip outside.

When training a dog, you need everyone who takes care of the dog to treat him the same way. Dogs respond best to consistency in their training methods. If multiple people are training a dog with different methods, the dog becomes confused.

When training a dog, make sure to stay consistent. Make sure everyone knows the right commands to give the dog; keep a list if necessary. Reward your dog for following commands. Do not reward your dog if he doesn't obey. If the dog deals with inconsistencies while training it can become confused and it will delay the dog being trained.

A first step to training a puppy is get him used to hearing his name. Simply start by calling his name as often as possible. Once he learns his name, you can encourage him to come to you when called. There is no other word your puppy should be taught first. Spending lots of time will create a strong bond with your puppy, and will lead to unbreakable trust. A puppy that trusts you will respond better your training.

Prior to acquiring the services of an animal behavior professional, you should conduct an interview and do some research into their background and reputation. Different animal behavior specialists use different practices. They also have varying opinions on what is best for your dog. You want to be certain that the trainer you go to employs practices that you are comfortable with.

You cannot rush through the training process. Remember that all dogs have short attention spans and puppies even more so. If training sessions are too long, the puppy won't remember the specifics of the training session, just that is was grueling and exhausting. This will make it harder to train him next time.

Most dogs have anxiety as a reason for chewing. Putting your dog in his crate with a chew toy will reduce the chance of destructive events and give him something to do while he waits for you.

Now that you know how to get started, you can start the training process. It is very important to have the right information before you begin training your new dog.
