A majority of dog bites can be attributed to a fearful dog. This happens when a dog feels frightened, threatened, and trapped. Using fear tactics are never a smart way to train a dog. This could result in you being bitten. He will be eager to please you and view you as the leader.

Figure out the things that motivate your dog to help you succeed at dog training. You are finding out about your dog, including the things he does and does not like. Irregardless of the intent of your training, include variety and make it enjoyable for him by rewarding him frequently with affectionate praise. The happier your dog is, the more successful your training with him will be.

Your dog may be engaged in destructive chewing due to anxiety. Enclosing him in a crate will prevent accidents from occurring and leaving him a chew toy will discourage destruction of your property.

You should always give your dog a challenge. Even though you know he's been properly trained, be sure to quiz him from time to time.

Make sure that your dog stays awake and active. Dogs can get bored very easily. Not to mention that a bored dog is going to be more stubborn during training. Your dog will be more relaxed and willing to listen if he is exercised frequently. A long walk or a brisk run are great ways to get rid of some of your dog's excess energy.

Training should be done when the dog is young. Young dogs have more resilient brains and are easier to train. It is important to start training with your dog when it is still a puppy. This will give it the guidance it needs to grow up to be a well-behaved dog.

Many canine behaviors are instinctual, so provide appropriate outlets for each of your dog's needs. It is important to provide dogs with the right type of food, space in which to exercise and a wide array of exciting pastimes.

Your family must be trained to be consistent with commands for your dog. If your dog jumps on the couch and you say "get off," but your husband uses "down boy", it will confuse your dog. If all members of the family use the same commands, training your dog will be much more easier.

It is best to pick a phrase for potty training your dog, and use it consistently. Use the same word or phrase each time you bring him out to go to the bathroom so that he understands what you want him to do and makes a memory link between the phrase and the act.

Dogs need to be taught the right habits as soon as they are brought to your home. It is much more difficult to break a dog's bad habits, than to teach it correct behavior in the beginning. Don't feed your dog scraps if you don't want want him begging at the table.

Don't bog your puppy down with more information than he can process. A puppy only has short bursts of energy and doesn't have a long attention; you've got to keep your training sessions positive and short. A training session that wears your puppy out is going to turn into an unpleasant memory, making him less likely to respond well to subsequent sessions, and more inclined to ignore what you are trying to teach him.

Many owners are surprised by how basic dog training can be added to their life and just how fast they can see results. So if your dogs relationship with you seems strained, try using these tips.
